The highly successful retail marketplace in the East Village complex at Victoria Park, Zetland has been shortlisted in two categories for the 2015 Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA ). The successful nominations by PAYCE, in association with Koichi Takada Architects and TURNER, are in the categories of Retail and Sustainability.

The IDEA program has been growing since its introduction in 2003 and attracts hundreds of entries from across Australia each year. The shortlist of projects will be judged by a panel of some of the country’s most experienced design professionals over the coming months.

Last month the East Village project won three significant industry awards for Development of the Year at the Urban Taskforce’s annual awards; Top Retail and Commercial Development at the Urban Development Institute of Australia (NSW/ACT) Awards for Excellence; and best in the Architecture-Residential-Constructed category at the Sydney Design Awards.

PAYCE Managing Director, Brian Boyd said everyone associated with the project was thrilled with the acknowledgements from within the industry and the local community.

“The project has received numerous accolades and to be shortlisted in this prestigious national award is another achievement for the team,” he said.

“The architects delivered a wonderful design that totally met the brief to bring a totally new, fresh approach to shopping by making every visit an enjoyable and memorable one.

“Importantly, the project reflects the attention to detail and premium quality that PAYCE is renowned for in all its projects,” Brian Boyd said.

PAYCE General Manager, Dominic Sullivan said East Village introduced a new level of design into the Sydney retail market.

“The architects sought inspiration from some of the best marketplaces to be found around the world and the result is an exciting place to shop and to meet up with friends,” he said.

Koichi Takada Architects’ interior design challenged the common perception of retail shopping by introducing more natural elements, such as raw timber materials and rustic steel, highlighted by the ‘Forests’ theme.

East Village has been designed and awarded a ‘5 star Green Star’ rating for the retail design in ‘Australian Excellence’ in environmentally sustainable design. The internal environment of the retail precinct is designed for maximum comfort, utilising skylights for vertical natural lighting, high comfort diffusion systems, low emission paints and laminates – all to enhance the public amenity.

Winners in the Australia-wide competition will be announced in Melbourne on 20 November.
